The STAT Team

What does the STAT team do to support the WAHS wrestling team?

Within WAHS, many teams have to work extremely hard each and every day to keep the team in shape, and the wrestling team is among these.  In order to maintain the health and safety of the team, hey need to have their wrestling equipment prepared, have their towels washed and dried, their spaces clean, and much more.

That is where the Stat team comes in, a group of people who do the background work for the wrestling team, taking care of the wrestling facilities and keeping the team running smoothly

“We do laundry, take stats, work tables at meets, make food for the wrestlers, and a lot of other things,”  sophomore Shay Slupe said.

The Stat team has to do many more tasks other than just those listed, which all take up quantities of their time. In just a single practice, they will do different tasks such as organizing the wrestling room, restocking medkits, and also helping with setup and teardown.

Part of being on the Stat team is keeping track of what happens during the matches, the eponym of the group. “Sometimes we don’t have enough STAT people at matches and duels, so we will have to each take down stats for several matches at once,” Shay said.

Although this is a job that is usually unseen and run behind the scenes, there are positives you can take from it. “Most of the (wrestling) team is really nice and are always willing to help you out with homework,”  Slupe said.

Although, with everything, there are some negatives of being in this hardworking group, which can be anything from cleaning to doing constant laundry. “I think the earliest we’ve had to be at school is around 5:30 am,” Winn said.

The coaches rely on the helpers to do some of the smaller tasks that they don’t have time for. Coach Miranda D’Agostini said, “I feel like it’s a good support system to have, especially for coaches, because there’s some things we can’t do. A lot of us are teaching all day, so that doesn’t leave a lot of time to do extra work. It’s nice to be able to rely on students who want to support and be a part of the team.”

“The most rewarding thing about being in the Stat team is watching one of your teammates come running off the mat after winning a match and you can see the amount of joy and victory on their face. It is so awesome to watch,” Slupe said.

“We are always looking for more people who love wrestling and would like a management kind of position,”  D’Agostini said. The team appreciates anybody that wants to help, and are always ready to accept more people into the wrestling family.
