ASB elections were shifted to June this year, instead of October as they have been, and though that may have been confusing for some people, there were three main reasons why the elections were changed to spring this year.
Leadership advisor Erik Ihde thought that having the elections at the end of the year would benefit everyone, especially the freshmen. “When we do their freshman orientation day, it is nice to be able to say, ‘Here’s your ASB president,’” Ihde said.
Another big reason for this change was to have the president already working by the time the school year started. When freshman orientation and homecoming were being prepared this year, they didn’t have anyone in the big positions to help them prepare for the big tasks at hand. “We didn’t have a president,” Ihde said. ”It was just an empty spot.”
The third main reason that having the elections at this time also benefits the people who are running is because it gives the candidates more time to be in action. Before, when they had the old system of electing the ASB officers, they would only run mid-year to mid-year, but this new change gives the ASB officers more time to be in the position to help. “Now we no longer have the mid-year change, and we have the president and company at the beginning of the year,” Ihde said. “It seems like the best of both worlds.”
Elections were held on June 6th and the ASB officers for next year are Brianna Wiliams for ASB president, Madison Marteeny and Cora Gilder for vice president, Natalie Flores for secretary, Baylee Williams for treasurer, Libbey Baldwin and Mathieu King for site council, and AJ Howard for school board reporter.
