Despite receiving her own fortnite icon skin, in November of 2024, Ice Spice otherwise known as Isis Najia Gaston, has been losing traction over her past fans. Many speculate that Ice Spice’s lost popularity is due to the recent weight loss that she has posted about. Ice Spice has been very heavily sexualized by her fans, due to how she behaves and dresses during her performances. After posting about her weight loss for the first time, according to the Capital XTRA the pop star lost 540,000 instagram followers in 12 days. This is an example of the social issue that American society has self established through social media. Celebrities are objectified and ridiculed no matter how their body looks.
Ice Spice addressed her fans and claimed that she follows a very specific diet and exercise regimen while on her Y2K tour. But, many speculate that there were substances such as ozempic at play despite Ice Spice denying these claims. Ozempic is a weekly injection that was originally designed for type 2 diabetes, but is now used as a popular weight loss solution. To attempt to further shut down the Ozempic rumor mill, Ice Spice would release her workout plan. Multiple videos of the singer at the gym doing various workouts including lifting dumbbells, running on a treadmill, yoga, and various core exercises. Even with the denial of ozempic the rumor keeps circling back. “I wish y’all never learned the word ozempic. That’s one thing I wish for. Oh my God, like, what even is Ozempic? What the f— is that? Genuinely, what is that?” Ice Spice stated in a recent interview with People magazine while on her world wide tour.
This goes to show how society has become so keen on weight loss, but opposed to artificial weight loss methods, such as ozempic. Oftentimes when celebrities lose weight, we as a society tear them down. Creating this endless cycle of weight based hatred that public figures can’t seem to escape. Selena Gomez, Chris Pratt, and Kelly Clarkson have all similarly had issues of hate surrounding their weight even after weight loss.
Ice Spice’s initial allegations of using ozempic to lose weight was near the start of 2024 and has continued into early 2025. The rapper has surely noticed the decline in fans losing 25 million monthly listeners in just over a year. This is a loss of over 50% of the rapper’s monthly Spotify listeners bringing her monthly listeners down to just about 15 million monthly listeners.
America has become so predisposed to harassing and tormenting celebrities in relation to their weight no matter if they attempt to lose weight. It creates this lose lose situation that puts celebrities in an awkward position that can potentially put them in difficult mental positions. How does our treatment of celebrities set a precedent for how we treat each other?
