Kids often have boundless energy, leading them to participate in a multitude of activities. However, when their schedules get full, it takes a toll on them.
“I was in gymnastics, dance, and soccer, and [my parents] eventually told me that I had to choose which one I wanted to do,” West Albany High School High Stepper junior Nyah Kinney said.
With a passion for dance, Kinney insisted on enrolling in as many dance classes as possible, leading to 10-12 hours a week spent in dance classes.
“My parents always supported me in whatever I wanted to do,” Kinney said. “When I was little, I begged to dance. I always think about [the fact] that little me wanted me to do this, so I need to do this.”
However, even with a passion for dance, things can still become too much.
“Freshman year, I had trouble with a medical condition […] I was really, really scared to go back, but once I did, it all came back,” Kinney said.
Despite setbacks that may occur, the support of Kinney’s friends and family enables her to keep her goal in mind.
“It has been my dream to go pro after high school, […] I’m hoping to be a [Portland State University] blazer dancer,” Kinney said.
Kinney has gotten the opportunity to dance with a close friend since she was six years old and plans to follow in her footsteps.
“I get to watch her do what she loves, and I want the same thing. She inspires me,” Kinney said.
Kinney has felt a strong connection to not only her younger self but to her team as well.
“My motivation since joining the high steppers […] is wanting to feel proud of my team and that we worked hard and that it was worth it,” Kinney said.
