There is a frequent debate at West Albany High School over whether seniors should have their own designated parking lot. 13 years ago, before the new building was built, seniors had their own parking lot while juniors had another.
According to Principal Rich Engel, seniors having their own parking lot caused a lot of trouble; “They [seniors] started dumping garbage on junior cars,” Engel said. This dispute between the senior class and the junior class resulted in the designated parking lots being removed.
In 2021, when students returned to school after the COVID-19 pandemic, WAHS gave seniors their own parking lot. When the parking lot went back to seniors only, there were still ideas of how it could be easier for everyone. Mr. Engel and former principal Mrs. Orsborn discussed a way to better fix the parking lot situation for everyone. That is when the combined parking lots were made.
“Orsborn said, ‘What if we make it a senior and junior parking spot, ’ and so we did…and literally all the problems stopped,” Mr. Engel said
The Class of 2026 has shown an interest in why they do not have their own parking lots. Senior Stellen Remington has shown interest in how this could be fixed: “The parking lot could be moved to the C Hall.”
Remington expressed that moving it so C hall would be the best option for the class of ‘26 because they are the smallest class.
When asked about if there could be possibility of seniors having their own parking spots, Mr. Engel stated that he can’t ever say never, but that he is fond of how everything is going currently.
