The slang used today has grown and changed substantially over the years. On October 6, new words were added to the Merriam Webster dictionary like “rizz,” “mid,” “simp,” and “bussin.” Many kids across the world use these words in a very natural way, but honestly, it’s hard to tell if this is positive or negative.
“The words fit today’s society,” Carson Foster, a sophomore said. He believes they have significant meaning. Although the words are different, it doesn’t mean they can’t be real. The English language has adopted many different cultures’ languages into their own, making something new over time. New words are constantly being added to the dictionary, and it’s no surprise.
Some people don’t think these words will be popular forever, saying that sooner or later they’ll fall into obscurity and wouldn’t have any real reason for them to be in the dictionary. Others think that since they were never part of the English vocabulary to begin with, they shouldn’t have been added at all. However, it doesn’t matter if the words are still used in a few years or not, many words today aren’t, and still have a place in the dictionary. Even though these words were completely made up, it’s okay for new words to be added to the dictionary and our general vocabulary.
Like the word rizz. The word rizz means “A mix of confidence, charm, magnetism, attractiveness,” (www.wsj.com). The word came from a popular streamer named Kai Cenat. There’s nothing bad about the word, and there’s no other word that summarizes everything like it. But what works with the word rizz is that it feels natural. The word has definitely earned its recognition even if it did nothing but exist.
Some words are fine to stay and have their place in the dictionary. They may not last forever or hold any originality, but the words have their meaning in our language and that is irrefutable.
