Pop music had a major resurgence this summer, and one of those musicians taking the lead in the charts is Charlie XCX, with her new album, brat. Brat summer has been ascribed to the summer of 2024 as an attitude and as a personal style for this summer. It’s attributed to bright colors, pop music, a self care attitude and a quality of nonchalance.

WW: How would you define a “brat summer”?
Ward: “I would define a brat summer as a summer where you spend a lot of time with your friends, and you do cool things that other people aren’t doing. It’s finding what’s cool for you. I think there’s so many ways to experience your brat summer.”
WW: Why do people like Charlie XCX?
Ward: “People like her music because it’s really hype and it’s fun. She’s pretty cool, and pretty brat if you would.”
Chayton Schuerger, 12 He/Him
WW: Why do people like Charlie XCX’s music?
Schuerger: “I don’t listen to her much but when I do it really gives a great vibe, really amps up the mood, it makes me feel like I could do anything, kind of like cocaine, but I don’t do cocaine.”
WW: How would you define a “brat summer”?
Schuerger: “Just do what you do, you are the moment. You got to be the moment, so it’s your summer, not anyone else’s summer.”
WW: Is there an attitude that you ascribe to brat summer?
Schuerger: “Yeah, you definitely have to be a brat. You have to make your own decisions, even if it takes a little bit from someone else. You have to be a little bit selfish.”
