Freshmen and sophomores may not have heard of Cultural Day, given they haven’t had the opportunity to attend one. Cultural Day is similar to a fair, where there will be multiple guest speakers and performers, organized by the Latinx del Oeste, Black Student Union and Asian American Pacific Islander clubs.
The 2023 Cultural Day had a mariachi band, as well as booths with ethnic foods and drinks. It takes place every two years, and this year it will be on April 11th.
Cultural Day functions similarly to Career Day, in the sense that it takes place during the school day on a special schedule. Students from all grade levels will spend 25 minutes at each station, rotating so everybody will be able to see what each group has to offer.
WW: Why is Cultural Day so important for WAHS as a school?
“It’s important that we celebrate and acknowledge the wide variety of cultures that exist here,” principal Rich Engel said. “I think that sometimes West Albany gets a reputation of not being very diverse, and we are incredibly diverse.” “It’s important to have the students experience the different cultures represented within the school and it’s fun,” BSU adviser Jackie Stewart said. Cultural Day is an opportunity for students to display and take pride in their culture.
