Through multiple surveys conducted by College Board from June 2024 to June 2025, it was found that 84% of American high school students have reported using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for school.
AI has become increasingly integrated with education. With this, the ethics of AI usage have been questioned. Deciding how to go about using AI and what to use it for has brought up a lot of discussion in culture, especially concerning education.
Freshman Chandler Durling says that although he does not use AI often, when he does, he uses it to understand what things are if he is unsure.
“It can aid people in doing tasks [and] help people in a lot of ways,” Durling said.
He mentions that AI, when used properly, can be very useful to do tasks that may be more difficult to achieve with other applications.
Even though Durling uses AI, he explains that plagiarism from AI is never okay and is what is contributing to the negative impact.
“There will be less jobs for other people, which means less people would be making money.”
Durling is worried about the issues that AI might cause for jobs in the future, as AI replaces opportunities for humans, less people will be able to make money.
Freshman Quinton Wangari says that he uses AI for all of his homework because he does not want to do it himself.
“It’s not bad, it’s not the worst thing ever,” he says.
Wangari does not have a strong opinion either way about AI, yet thinks it has a more positive influence on society as a whole.
“AI art steals a lot of stuff.”
Art generated by AI is what makes Wangari opposed to AI, due to the way it takes from actual artists’ works to make art.
“Depends on how you use it, I guess. Some people use it for good, some people use it for bad.”
Wangari makes it a point that AI’s impact will depend on how society chooses to use it, and that if used correctly, there will be a positive outcome.
“I feel like if you use AI right, then it’s actually really beneficial, especially when you have to stay on top of subjects. If you need to quiz yourself, you can just ask AI to give you questions, and then you’re able to solve on your own,” said Sophomore Leticia Sanchez Gonzalez.
Sanchez Gonzalez utilizes AI through her education by creating study guides for math and Biology classes. However, there are some issues she faces with this.
“If you don’t ask the right questions, it will just give you the answers without learning, and so you don’t really get in-depth learning like you would with a teacher,” she said.
Academic integrity is becoming an issue with students and their teachers, with there being little evidence of AI usage if used in a certain way. Because of this, academically, AI is generally frowned upon. Yet for Sanchez Gonzalez, she says her teachers have also been using AI.
“I started using AI because we were introduced to it in science last year with Mr. G. Our entire final was based on AI.”
She thinks that AI doing the thinking for you will not allow learning to happen, which is why she refuses to use AI to do her work for her.
“AI is going to make people lazy. It’s just an easy escape for not wanting to use any critical thinking,” she said.
