Decline in Funds:

There is an expected $10 million deficit for the Albany Public Schools next year. Originally expecting an $8 million deficit, the rise in numbers is likely due to a decline in public school enrollment in the Albany Public Schools. There has been a 4 percent decrease in the number of K-12 students enrolled in public schools, stemming from the Covid
Pandemic. Another reason for this financial outlook is the passage of the tax cut last summer, and Oregon school districts rely heavily on income taxes for funds. Although this was an unexpected increase in deficits, there are likely to be more.
Rescue Rubbish:
There are a lot of things we throw away all day. In every classroom and throughout the commons, a garbage can is available to properly dispose of rubbish from
the building. We see a lot of trash in our parking lots and all over campus grounds. Nobody finds it enjoyable to look at their school and see trash on the ground. Let’s do better to dispose of our trash appropriately and effectively in trash cans. We have the capability to keep our campus looking better every day.
An Ultimate Success:

The AP Biology class held a car-cleaning fundraiser the week of the Polar Plunge and cleaned cars before, d
uring, and after school. The students in this class washed cars for a fee of $20 raising roughly $650. The money raised for the polar plunge goes toward the Special Olympics in Oregon. The Special Olympics allows athletes to train,
be on a team, and compete as they do in the real Olympics. With the help of everyone who participated in the Polar Plunge and everyone who helped wash cars, the school was able to raise approximately $1,400 for the Polar Plunge, a fun annual tradition at West Albany High School.
