A day to day life as a custodian

Q&A with custodian Chris Priest

What is your favorite part of your job?

Interaction with kids. Kids feel free to talk to me about their problems and what they need help with. Even though I’m not a teacher, I can surely be a mentor to them and help guide them to their full potential.

What is your least favorite part of your job?

When we have to clean the gross messes like people throwing up and moss and all that stuff.

What made you want this job?

Well, I need a job and after 20 years I made a commitment to stay at this job. Also, being the janitor for West Albany High School is very great because I feel like an equal here and people don’t treat me like a janitor.

What was your most memorable moment as a janitor?

Last year the valedictorian shouted at me in her speech, which made me feel really good about myself and it was all because I showed her some dance moves in 9th grade because she wasn’t dancing and standing in the corner.

How did Dr. Spice’s helping hand affect you guys last year?

It helped us mentally because we cared that kids wanted to help us clean the school and saved us a lot of work in the summer. It was crazy how 40 kids wanted to help us. It still is crazy to me. In my 20 years, I have never seen something like that.
