West Albany’s Jazz I Ensemble placed first in the West Salem Jazz Festival, which took place on Feb. 11, an amazing feat for all the ensemble members, which also secured their place at state.
Long time trumpet player Merannen Gatien weighed in on the ensemble’s success, saying, “I feel like jazz is so unique compared to different music styles,” Gatien said, “and at this jazz festival, some of the best high school jazz bands were there. And they all competed, so it was a big deal.”
Some of the competitors included McKay, Newport, and Newberg high school, which proved to be worthy competition for the ensemble. “Newberg had some really good players, ” Gatien added. “We qualified for state in May because we got first. I’m super looking forward to that.”
