At just 14 years old, Lily Hamblin has already earned a spot on the Varsity Volleyball team at West Albany High School. Standing at 6 ‘2, Lily’s presence on the court is noticeable, as she has quickly taken on some leadership roles and has shown clear dedication to the team. Her achievements show how young talent can excel and encourage others to pursue their interests.
Q and A:
WW: How do you feel being the tallest girl on your Volleyball team?
Hamblin: “I think that it does come with its challenges, but it definitely does help me in the long run, especially with the positions that I play.”
WW: Is every one of your family members this tall?
Hamblin: “No, my dad is about 6’2 – so he’s about my height – And then my mom is 5 ‘7, then I have a brother,He’s like 6’4 – ish.”
WW: What position do you play? Do you think your height has affected them?
Hamblin:”I play middle blocker and outside hitter,it definitely helps to be a lot taller so that you can block over the net.And [with] outside hitter, it definitely [helps] because if someone gives you the ball, you can swing a lot higher to get it over the two people blocking.”
WW: What was your motivation to play volleyball?
Hamblin: “It was just kinda a thing of like, ‘Hey, do you wanna try it?’ and so I tried it out and I really did like it. . . and so I just kept going with it.”
WW: Are you confident in your skills for this sport?
Hamblin: ”I definitely know that there are some things that I can improve on… but where I am now, playing for about a year, I think that I have definitely improved from where I started.”
WW: What’s your favorite thing about being part of a team?
Hamblin: “My favorite thing about being part of the team is definitely a lot of the team bonding. . . a lot of the girls are very nice and they are always helping people and always trying to include [everybody.]”
WW: How long have you been playing volleyball?
Hamblin:”. . . I just started about a year and a half ago.”
WW: Do you think you’ll continue playing volleyball in the future?
Hamblin: “I do believe that I [will] most likely be going [forward] with it.”
WW: Do you think you’ll be doing any other sports, or do you plan to focus mostly on volleyball?
Hamblin: “So I’ll mostly prioritize volleyball, but then I also play basketball in the winter, and then in the spring, [I’ll] do another sport. I don’t really know what sport, but I’ll choose something.”
WW: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Hamblin: “I just think that the team is supportive. . . they are very talented this year.”
