There’s been a large issue within the West Albany High School campus this year, and that is parents and guardians have been dropping their children off in the wrong parking lots. This has caused some parking lots to be backed up, making students who drive to school quite frustrated when they go to park.

      “I think they’re doing it for convenience, quite honestly,” said freshman counselor McKenna Fee. “Have you ever seen how packed the lines can get over here? Lots of parents drop their kids off and then go straight to work, so I know time can be an issue. We want everything to go smoothly, and staff and buses, we don’t want them to get all backed up either. Although, I would think that they’re doing it for their own convenience.”

     This is quite the issue, which could be because of human psychology. Fee said, “I could definitely see that coming into play, because it’s hard to initiate that yourself. [For reference] being the first person to do it, but when you see other people doing it, you think, ‘Oh, there’s no consequence for these people, so what’s going to happen if I do it? Probably nothing, right?’ The more and more people do it, the more you think you can do it as well.”

     She then went on to answer how this connects to the nature of human beings and society.

     “I mean, I feel like as humans, we always want to do things as easily as possible, or as least challenging as possible so that when it comes to dropping your student off. You want to skip some steps, or maybe skip some rules and do it in a couple of minutes, versus waiting in line over here in the parent drop off line, which might take an extra 5 to 10 minutes? I think it’s just kind of human nature to do things as quickly as possible, especially when things like work and time restraints come into play.”
