From open world rpg’s to intense driving simulators, 2025 produced a multitude of games, but there was one game in particular that stuck. Peak, released June 16th, 2025, captured the attention of all video game players at any skill level, as a simple climbing game that you can play with your friends.
The goal is to climb through three different terrains and ultimately get your team to the peak of a mountain. Along the way, there is gear, food, poisonous plants, zombies, etc. Together, you and your group have to navigate fulfilling your need bar and dodging different obstacles that the game throws at you.
Due to Peak’s rapid popularity, it created an entirely new genre of game that the internet is referring to as ” Friendslop “, a term that is given to a game that has no real substance and is only there to be a bonding experience with your friends. While this term sounds quite negative, it has given other creators the opportunity to share their own small games centered around group gameplay, something that hasn’t been popular in a little while.
While Peak officially launched in June of 2025, it held strong throughout the rest of the year being spread around the internet with funny clips from gameplay. Not only this but the company ended the year with a collaboration as BBNO$, the famous rap artist. Within the game, if you played a certain horn found on the mountain, This collaboration brought a lot more attention back to the game and reinteresting a lot of players simultaneously.
Reflecting on the games we got in 2025, Peak brought people together to connect with their friends, even when not physically together, a quality becoming more and more appreciated into 2026. The game reminds the world to slow down and make time for those that mean a lot to you, even if you aren’t with them physically. But, it begs the question, what will the lead game of 2026 be?
