Senior, Avery Nahorniak

While people are stuck at home, senior Avery Nahorniak is daydreaming about travel abroad, “We went [to Europe] a few years ago and absolutely loved it…we were hoping to go to Greece because we’ve heard it’s absolutely gorgeous, and… it’s just a beautiful place with amazing culture and amazing art,” said Nahorniak.

We’ve been in quarantine for about a year now, are you ready for it to be over?

In some ways yes, but also no. I am excited to be able to go out and see people once again, but I know right now in the US that’s not an option at all… while I am excited to go to college and have a normal year I know we are still a long ways off from that.

You’re a senior correct? What college are you planning on attending?

Yes. Right now I’m planning on attending ACPHS [Albany College of Pharmacy and Health and Sciences] It’s in Albany New York and so I haven’t been able to visit, I don’t really know the area at all and I’m hoping NY quarantine restrictions are lifted so I can go fly our there for like a day or two and visit and come back. If not I would have to take two weeks off so I can go out there and quarantine… Or I might just have made a decision without ever visiting the campus.

Has the pandemic changed you or your perspective on life?

In a way it has, it’s kind-of shown me how important it is to take care of people in our community because a lot of people are struggling right now. It especially shows how we take for granted a lot of the people who are essential workers right now… anyone who works in grocery stores. They have always been looked down upon by a lot of society, but they are really what’s helping people stay alive right now.

What do you want to do after the pandemic?

A couple of years ago we had kind-of tentative plans to go to Europe as my senior trip and so once the pandemic is over, in a couple years we’re thinking about doing that again.

Why did you want to go to Europe?

We went [to Europe] a few years ago and absolutely loved it…we were hoping to go to Greece because we’ve heard it’s absolutely gorgeous, and… it’s just a beautiful place with amazing culture and amazing art.

Are you making plans to do anything after quarantine has ended and the pandemic is under control?

We haven’t made any immediate plans because we don’t know when it’s going to be safe to travel again, and we don’t know when we are going to get vaccinated. Even then we don’t know if the countries we would want to fly to will be vaccinated or if we will even be allowed in. So we really haven’t made any plans at all.
