Staff member builds interest in African American Leadership Club

Q&A with club adviser Jackie Stewart

Do you remember when you guys had the first meet?

Our first meeting was last school year during lunch in the little theater room and I had around 12 kids.

How was this club started?

[Principal Susie] Orsborn came to me with the idea of starting the club and I thought it was a great thing to do.

How often do you guys meet?

We meet once a week on Thursdays during lunch in Mr Crows room.

In what ways has this club affected you?

Talking with the kids about a certain word that has been thrown around by their white counterparts, who have ask for the “pass” to say the word. This is one of the big things that has affected me. Also, being around the kids is so awesome and I love the fact they are open to talking about things that’s going on with them. That definitely has a huge affect on me.

Have you noticed any problems with the club?

One of the problems with the club is… getting more of our Black students to come to the meetings. Some don’t want to give up their lunch and some feel like they will be made fun of by their white counterparts because it’s a club for Black students. This is what I have heard. My goal is to make sure they are comfortable with themselves and not worry about what other kids are saying. I want the club to be a great experience for them.

Do you think there are any ways that you could improve this club?

I’m not sure there is a way. I’ve tried a lot of different things to entice the kids to come to the meetings, but so far it hasn’t worked. I will continue to keep at it to hopefully get kids to participate lol.
