Valentine’s Day Dismay: What do Students Think About Valentine’s Day?

Q&A with freshman Sydney Braaten

Freshman Sydney Braaten (Mina Clower )

During the month of February, many people share how they feel about Valentine’s Day. Some love it, but for others, it’s their least favorite holiday. There are many reasons why people don’t like Valentine’s Day, here’s what people at West had to say. Sydney Braaten, a freshman, shared her thoughts on the holiday.

When would you say your hatred for Valentine’s Day started?

Sixth grade, because everyone was starting to get into couples and I thought it was really gross and weird.

Are there any specific reasons why you don’t like it?

It’s basically just like a marketing holiday. And also, you shouldn’t need a special day to tell someone that you love them and tell them how you appreciate them and celebrate them. Because if you don’t do that normally, what’s the point of being in that relationship, or being in that friendship?

Do you appreciate and get the idea of the holiday?

I do but I just think like, we don’t use this particular day for it when we should be doing it normally.

Do you think it’s unfair, like people who want to celebrate their friends or significant others but aren’t able to?

Yeah, cause there’s a lot of social pressure on people for the holiday too and it can be disappointing for both people when it doesn’t end up the way someone wanted it to.
