Disconnected: WAHS Private Wi-Fi is made unavailable to non school issued devices

In the middle of April, 2023, the GAPS district IP made it unable to access WAHS private Wi-Fi on a non-school issued device. This posed many problems for both teachers and students. But what was the reason behind it?

Assistant principal Sean Saxton says that they split the wifi signal for security reasons, but some people have a problem with that.

“When I try and go on my personal device, it tells me that the website is not protected and the server isn’t secure so I should turn back,” freshman Avery Howell said. “I feel annoyed because if it’s my personal account, it’s my personal account. I shouldn’t be stopped.”

For some, it has shown to be more of a problem than just being annoying. Many teachers have reported it causing problems in the classroom, too. “It’s been a problem for me in the classroom with online applications. They don’t block school devices, but they do block it when it’s a personal device,” science teacher Gareth Engler said.

Most likely the Wi-Fi won’t be changed back because it was a purposeful district decision, in an attempt to keep the Wi-Fi server secure. This won’t allow foreign devices on WAHS private, which hinders students and teachers alike.
